FACADES
Extending Gerard & Kelly’s ongoing investigation of the “ruins of modernism,” Facades plays with the viewer’s perception of one of the most iconic sites of modern architecture, Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse in Marseille, France. The triptych transforms a still
from Bright Hours into an abstract plane of saturated tones, interrupting the usual narrative of modernist architecture as devoid of color. In their work on the discourses that undergird this building and other architectural sites, Gerard & Kelly interrogate the ways in which the history of modernism has often been written to exclude its deviations and antagonisms, making room for alternate histories and marginal subjectivities to take shape.
