MULTIPLE

In the Multiple series, a single frame from Gerard & Kelly’s film Panorama is split into three parts and printed as woodblocks, at times on a silkscreened celestial map. The center of the triptych, where the hands of the three dancers converge, is rotated. This intentional visual slippage produces choreographic permutations which, when seen in series, make visible to the viewer one's own false perceptions of orientation and cohesion. Like the technique of Japanese woodblock printing that inspired the series, the map of navigational stars and constellations dates from the 19th century, an era of colonial expansion and global cultural and commercial exchange.
